This assignment allowed us to use choice boards as way of giving children a sense of control over their learning and it allows students to display their learning in the way that they feel best represents their knowledge.
We especially wanted to think about how to build and forster a genuine learning partnerships with parents/guardians. The choices we offered should allow parents/guardians to gain insight into the strategies used in class and provide them with the means to support their children in their learning without feeling overwhelmed.
This is how we would create the blog post for the parents/guardians of a 3rd grade class:
Dear parents/guardians,
We created another hopefully engaging choice board to work on during this week.
You can choose one activity to work on with your child (more activities are of course welcome).
We hope this will allow you to gain insight into the strategies we use in the classroom and into the strengths and progress of your child.
This choice board will help build on children’s existing content knowledge by creating real world connections in contexts children are already familiar with.
In the document we also share strategies and resources applied in class that could support you in helping your child with their home learning.
